Our Story- Since 1999 we’ve handmade organic mattresses & beds in our Devon workshop on the banks of the river Exe using only nature’s finest materials. We buy all of our raw materials direct from source, we manufacture everything ourselves under one roof and we only sell direct to you, our customer, in our own showrooms and on our own website. We control the whole journey, from Devon sheep farm to your bedroom, to give you the best possible experience and ultimately, the best night’s sleep. It’s a slower, more thoughtful, more sustainable approach to growing a business, and it’s the only way we’ll ever do it.
A long time ago a nautical idea sparked between Naturalmat founders Mark & Peter. Mark had grown up in the family boatyard in Devon and Peter was a keen sailor. They realised that while expensive boats had all the mod cons in most departments, the mattresses were woefully inadequate. They were made of cheap, synthetic slabs of polyurethane foam – truly horrible stuff which retained heat & moisture and made for a hot and uncomfortable night’s sleep.
They quickly discovered that the solution was to use natural materials. Inherently breathable, natural fibres wick heat and moisture away from the body and create a far healthier, more comfortable and longer lasting mattress. Many prototypes later the day jobs were ditched and in a corner of the boatyard on Mark’s old table tennis table, production began.
A year later Mark and his wife Alice were expecting their first child. They looked into nursery mattresses and found that they too were made entirely from man-made synthetic fibres with nasty plastic covers. Surely babies deserved a nice natural sleeping environment too? So Mark & Peter set to work and within six months launched the first nursery mattress to pass all British standards with no plastics, synthetics, glues or chemical fire retardants. Just 100% natural, the way it should be.
“Our mission is to help people sleep in a healthier and more sustainable way.”
