Waste and Recyclables Collection

In an increasingly populated and urbanized world, cities have to manage their public services intelligently, innovatively and as inexpensively as possible. Increasing waste volumes and its related risks entail growing environmental, economic and health costs. The sustainable management of public services therefore becomes a crucial cornerstone for cities to ensure their dynamic and attractiveness.

In Singapore, Veolia is a public waste collection service partner, appointed by the National Environmental Agency (NEA). Currently serving the Clementi - Bukit Merah sector, we are managing the daily collection of general and recyclables waste for public housing estates, landed properties, commercial premises and government establishments.

Recovering valuable recyclables

As part of the comprehensive waste collection services, Veolia Singapore owns and operates a Material Recovery Facility to sort incoming recyclables waste streams from municipal and commercial collection. The commingled recyclables are sorted through a series of automated and manual processes at the semi-automated sorting line. An industrial shredder and heavy duty baler process the recovered materials further into bales, ready for transportation to points of reprocessing.

Our Material Recovery Facility frequently hosts educational visits to schools and interested groups to raise environmental awareness.

Urban integration and performance

Veolia is developing innovative technical solutions and collection methods to provide its customers with multiple collection systems, tailored to their regional and economic needs.

The needs of dense inner city areas differ greatly from commercial or urban residential areas.  In response to the individual challenges, Veolia has redefined its technology and customized the collection services to local needs through a combination of centralized and door-to-door collection.

As part of our continuous review and improvement efforts to ensure operational efficiency and minimized environmental impact, Veolia invested in new technologies and set new industry benchmarks:

The heart of our waste collection is an extensive fleet of Rear End Loaders and Hooklift Trucks. The trucks come with several technical improvements in terms of safety, waste spillage and a Tridem system for  better manoeuvrability in tight spaces and with less physical strain on our truck drivers. GPS systems became the standard to enhance collection efficiency and design most productive routing and RFID technologies help tracing and reporting recycling rates.

As part of our efforts to improve the waste collection of centralized bins, we deployed the Minimatic, a fixed and fully enclosed compactor. Compared to mobile compactors which collection imposes higher safety risks, illegal dumping, more waste spillages and lower productivity due to higher truck movements, the fixed compactor is more safe and more flexible. This type of compactor allows us to collect the waste with Rear End Loaders which reduces the truck movement from two routes to only one and therefore, reduce environmental impact and traffic in residential areas.

The new refuse compactor GOMIC has been adopted as well, which is specifically designed for waste with higher organic content, for example for food markets and food centres. The refuse is being stored more hygienically, the refuse compaction reduces waste volumes and increases the waste capacity and the transfer process has been improved to eliminate waste soillages for organic waste.
