SunPower’s big breakthrough came with the development of the ‘all back contact cell’. Conventional solar cells have collector wires on the front surface to capture the electric current produced. However, these wires cover part of the collector area, reducing the surface exposed to the light. SunPower have developed a cell where both positive and negative collector wires are on the back surface, thereby exposing all of the front of the cell to daylight. It has increased efficiency up to 23% (compared to 16% for a conventional modules).
