HISTORY OF THE BUREAU

Bureaus have a wonderfully rich history, dating back to the 1600’s, when they were nothing more than a tilted flat surface for “scribing”, to the incredibly elaborate “Wooton desk” versions of the 1880’s.

In today’s world, many of us are spending more time working from home.  As a result, bureaus are experiencing something of a renaissance.  They have become an essential piece of furniture for people looking for stylish elegance, modern-day practicality and, in this case, a wonderfully eye-catching, stylish design.

BESPOKE CREATION FOR GRAND DESIGNS LIVE

This particular bureau painted in Coal Black was a commission for the House of Upcycling stand at Grand Designs Live, as part of a 'Rustic Contemporary' room set.

The striking reverse zig-zag pattern was created by hand taping the design onto the original piece, gently painting over with a bold, contemporary Coal Black colour, then painstakingly removing the tape, revealing just the right amount of the original wood to create a truly unique, one-off piece.

The bureau was much admired whilst on show at the recent Grand Designs Live exhibition in Birmingham, particularly for its butter smooth paintwork and original design  and is now available for purchase.

NATHAN BUREAU COMMISSIONS

Nathan Furniture is a gift to the furniture artist.  It lends itself to so many different types of restyling.  They are blank canvases just waiting to be reinvented.

In addition to the bureau painted in Coal Black, I also have another naked bureau which can be made to order to your specification. You can choose from the drop down options.

Alternatively, if you would like to discuss a commission piece, please get in touch and together we can create something truly stunning for your home and your unique style.

With the rise in conscious consumerism, the reuse of vintage furniture pieces and the reduction of environmental impact is ever more important in my business. Wherever possible I use environmentally friendly products in my furniture restyling and packaging processes and try to ensure I make good decisions about my sourcing and delivery to limit my business footprint. I'm committed to reducing any CO2 emissions created by my business by planting trees for every order taken. More Trees offer the opportunity to plant the most needed trees, anywhere in the world and I'm so happy to have helped the planting effort. I've been a National Trust member for over 25 years and have decided that helping to replenish UK woodlands is a fitting tribute to the British master craftsmen who made the furniture I transform. I am therefore now helping the National Trust to tackle climate change by supporting their goal of planting 20 million tress by 2030. I will plant a tree in the heart of National Trust woodlands, on your behalf for every order taken. This will help to offset any CO2 emissions generated by my small business.
