To start dealing with Australia’s mounting plastic crisis, the federal government last week launched its first National Plastics Plan.

The plan will fight plastic on various fronts, such as banning plastic on beaches, ending polystyrene packaging for takeaway containers, and phasing in microplastic filters in washing machines. But we’re particularly pleased to see a main form of  will also be phased out.

Biodegradable plastic promises a plastic that breaks down into natural components when it’s no longer wanted for its original purpose. The idea of a plastic that literally disappears once in the ocean, littered on land or in landfill is tantalizing—but also (at this stage) a pipe dream.

 

Why ‘biodegradable’ ain’t that great

“Biodegradable” suggests an item is made from plant-based materials. But this isn’t always the case.

A major problem with “biodegradable” plastic is the lack of regulations or standards around how the term should be used. This means it could, and is, being used to refer to all manner of things, many of which aren’t great for the environment.

Many plastics labeled biodegradable are actually traditional fossil-fuel plastics that are simply degradable (as all plastic is) or even “oxo-degradable”—where chemical additives make the fossil-fuel plastic fragment into microplastics. The fragments are usually so small they’re invisible to the naked eye, but still exist in our landfills, water ways and soils.

The National Plastics Plan aims to work with industry to phase out this problematic “fragmentable” plastic by July, 2022.

Some biodegradable plastics are made from plant-based materials. But it’s often unknown what type of environment they’ll break down in and how long that would take.

Those items may end up existing for decades, if not centuries, in landfill, litter or ocean as many plant-based plastics actually don’t break down any quicker than traditional plastics. This is because not all plant-based plastics are necessarily compostable, as the way some plant-based polymers form can make them incredibly durable.

So it’s best to avoid all plastic labeled as biodegradable. Even after the ban eliminates fragmentation—the worst of these—there’s still no evidence remaining types of biodegradable plastics are better for the environment.

Compostable plastics aren’t much better

Compostable plastic is another label you may have come across that’s meant to be better for the environment. It’s specifically designed to break down into natural, non-toxic components in certain conditions.

Unlike biodegradable plastics, there are certification standards for compostable plastics, so it’s important to check for one the below labels. If an item doesn’t have a certification label, there’s nothing to say it isn’t some form of mislabelled “biodegradable” plastic.

But most certified compostable plastics are only for industrial composts, which reach very high temperatures. This means they’re unlikely to break down sufficiently in home composts. Even those certified as “home compostable” are assessed under perfect lab conditions, which aren’t easily achieved in the backyard.

And while certified compostable plastics are increasing, the number of industrial composting facilities that actually accept them isn’t yet keeping up.

Nor are collection systems to get your plastics to these facilities. The vast majority of kerbside organics recycling bins don’t currently accept compostable plastics and other packaging. This means placing compostable plastics in these bins is considered contamination.

Even if you can get your certified compostable plastics to an appropriate facility, composting plastics actually reduces their economic value as they can no longer be used in packaging and products. Instead, they’re only valuable for returning nutrients to soil and, potentially, capturing a fraction of the energy used to produce them.

Finally, if you don’t have an appropriate collection system and your compostable plastic ends up in landfill, that might actually be worse than traditional plastic. Compostable plastics could release methane—a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide—in landfill, in the same way food waste does.

So, you should only consider  plastics when you have a facility that will take them, and a way to get them there.

And while the National Plastics Plan and National Packaging Targets are aiming for at least 70% of plastics to be recovered by 2025 (including through composting), nothing yet has been said about how collection systems will be supported to achieve this.

Is recycling helpful?

Only an estimated 9% of plastics worldwide (and 18% in Australia) are actually recycled. The majority ends up in landfill, and can leak into our oceans and natural environments.

In Australia, systems for recycling the most common types of plastic packaging are well established and in many cases operate adequately. However, there are still major issues.

For example, many plastic items can’t be recycled in our kerbside bins (including soft and flexible plastics such as bags and cling films, and small items like bottle lids, plastic cutlery and straws). Placing these items in your kerbside recycling bin can contaminate other recycling and even damage sorting machines.

What’s more, much of the plastic collected for recycling doesn’t have high value “end markets.” Only two types of plastic—PET (think water or soft drink bottles and some detergent containers) and HDPE (milk bottles, shampoo/conditioner/detergent containers)—are easily turned back into new plastic containers.

The rest end up in a stream called “mixed plastics,” much of which we have traditionally exported overseas for recycling due to low demand here. The new waste export ban may help fix this in the future.

 

So what do you do about plastic?

The obvious answer then, is to eliminate problematic plastic altogether, as the National Plastics Plan is attempting to do, and replace single-use plastics with reusable alternatives.

Little actions such as bringing your reusable water bottle, coffee cup and cutlery, can add up to big changes, if adequately supported by businesses and government to create a widespread culture shift. So too, could a swing away from insidious coffee capsules, cling wrap and cotton buds so many of us depend on.

Opting too, for plastic items made from recycled materials can make a big impact on the feasibility of plastic recycling.

Ocean plastics: The ecological disaster of our time

Really take this in for a second….

Think about every toothbrush, every plastic razor, plastic bag or “disposable” water bottle, every straw, plastic cup…every shampoo bottle you’ve ever used.  Every. Single. One.  Now consider that with an estimated lifetime of at least 450 years, plastic will outlive you as well as your great-great-great-great-grandchildren.  At worst case – it will NEVER go away.  As both the human population and plastic production continue to increase, we are all living now in our own plastic waste.

If anything can attest to the issue of plastics – it is Earth’s oceans.  It is estimated that the ocean contains 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic while 99.9% of floating marine debris is plastic.  Much of this plastic is found in ocean gyres, massive surface currents that circulate in each of Earth’s major oceans.  Plastic gets funneled into theses currents where it collects, forming what scientists refer to as trash islands.  Currently, each ocean gyre contains its own island of trash.

 

 

While these plastic patches of marine debris are called garbage islands, this name can be misleading.  The term may conjure mental images of large floating structures, yet much plastic exists as nurdles, microplastics less than 5mm inches in size.  Nurdles form through photochemical reactions with sunlight, a process commonly referred to as dry rot and can be further broken down by wind and wave action.  Other plastics begin small, such as the microbeads found in many cosmetic items or plastic fibers found in our clothing and textiles.  These tiny plastics create what is commonly referred to as “plastic soup,” however larger plastics are found in the gyres as well including plastic containers, bottles, lids, rope, packaging, and discarded fishing equipment.

Perhaps the best known of these gyres is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, currently measuring in at twice the size of Texas.  Like all plastic islands, the Pacific Garbage Patch is growing.  Recent findings suggest that Pacific plastic pollution is 16 times higher than previously reported and based on data collected by boats or air, is estimated to weigh a total of 80,000 tonnes.  As plastics revolve around the Pacific trash vortex, they entangle marine organisms or are consumed by them.

Plastic islands are only one observable aspect of ocean pollution, yet no square mile of ocean is free of plastic.  It is estimated that of all the ocean plastic, only 30% is found at the surface while the rest sinks to the ocean depths.

 

 

For animals that live in the ocean, these plastics are often detrimental.  Because plastics don’t break down, they remain intact in the bellies of the animals that consume them — leading to malnutrition and eventually starvation.  Plastic is the cause of death to one million seabirds worldwide while another 100,000 marine animals die due to starvation or entanglement in ocean plastics.

Regardless of your proximity to the sea, ocean plastics affect us all.  The ocean plays a vital role in the transport of heat and nutrients, controlling Earth’s climate and supporting our planet’s largest and most diverse ecosystems.  Ocean plankton produces 70% of Earth’s oxygen while nearly 3 billion people worldwide – almost half of the global population, rely on seafood for their primary source of protein. Furthermore, 10% of people globally rely on healthy fisheries for their livelihoods while the oceans contribute an estimated U$D1.5 trillion annually to the world’s economy.  The oceans are also a vital carbon sink, removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to reduce the impacts of global climate change.  Despite the oceans’ importance, plastic is projected to outweigh the fish in the ocean by 2050.

Ocean plastic should be of particular concern to those of us who enjoy seafood.  Microplastics or plastic fibers are often consumed by fish or shellfish before working their way up the food chain.  Scientists who study plastic pollution in shellfish claim “when you eat clams and oysters, you’re eating plastics as well” while several fish species are also expected to contain plastics.  Plastic releases numerous toxins such as bisphenol-A and phthalates, compounds are known to cause cancers and birth defects, impair immunity, and disrupt our bodies’ endocrine system.  Not only are plastics themselves harmful, but they also act like a sponge to ocean pollutants.  Toxic metalsdetergentspesticides, and other marine pollutants have also been found adsorbed on ocean plastics.

 

 

Ocean plastics are expected to increase up to 3 times their current amount by 2050 and while these projections sound stark, there are several things we can all do in order to reduce the issue.  Most ocean plastic, an estimated 80%, originates on land.  As land-dwellers, we all must do our best to decrease the amount of plastic entering our oceans.  This can be accomplished through recycling or better yet, just simply buying less plastic.

Reducing your plastic use can sound a tad overwhelming, but I am here to assure you that it is not only is it possible but relatively easy once in the habit!  Plastic is everywhere, consciously acknowledging this fact is half the battle. Once you become aware of your plastic use, it is much easier to decrease it.  Think about the plastic products you use on a normal basis and how you could use less.

When cutting plastic consumption, start by reducing your use of single-use plastics.  Single-use plastics are exactly what they sound like – plastics that are used only once then discarded.  Water bottles, straws, plastic bags, coffee cups, and plastic silverware are typical culprits, though nearly half of all plastic produced each year is considered “disposable”.  Thankfully, you can easily purchase sustainable products to replace these single-use plastics.  Considering the fact that the average plastic is typically only 12 minutes or that one million water bottles sold every minute, replacing these items with reusables can make a massive difference.  You can even buy reusable straws or silverware to prevent any unwanted single-use plastics.  Joining groups like the Plastic Pollution Coalition, the Green Education Foundation, or Plastic Free July can help to further educate and inspire on your path towards less plastic.

 

 

The fishing industry also plays a massive role in ocean plastics, and scientists were surprised to discover that, by weight, 46% of the plastics found in the Pacific Garbage Patch exist as or originate from discarded fishing gear.  Fishing gear is especially dangerous because it is specifically designed to capture and kill marine organisms.  To prevent the loss of fishing gear, a detrimental practice known as ghost fishing, support sustainable fisheries.  Seafood Watch, an organization of The Monterey Bay Aquarium has compiled a list of sustainable seafood species and partners, which can be found here.  Divers can also play a role by joining ghost fishing removal groups, like the Ghost Fishing Foundation.

So, what can you do to help? If you would like to contribute financially, our oceans would greatly appreciate it. We would recommend supporting Boyan Slat’s Ocean Cleanup. Boyan is the Elon Musk of marine sustainability. Since 18 years of age, he has gone to battle with the largest collection of ocean plastics on planet Earth: the Great Pacific Garbage patch. If you do not believe in the effectiveness of the NGO charity model (which is a belief that has valid points) – there are plenty of for-profit organizations that are saving the planet as a by-product of their business operations. However, money is not the be-all and end-all. Many people want to help save our oceans but feel despondent because they just don’t have the money to donate. You can make a difference without money! How are you using Tupperware and shopping bags? What straws do you use? Do we even need straws? And what about your voice?

Perhaps one of the best things we can do is lead by example and educate others about the plastic problem.  Many are unaware of the detrimental impacts of single-use plastics and have genuinely never considered it.  Educate your friends and loved ones and don’t allow yourself to become discouraged!  Every small step makes a difference.  If we can all find one change to make it will have a serious impact on ocean plastics.

Plastic today is a serious but solvable issue.  Plastic has been detected in hundreds of food items, sea salt, beer, and in both bottled and tap water.  Toxins from these plastics have been found in our blood, and even breast milk.  Not only do these plastics harm us, but they also continue to have a detrimental effect on marine organisms and one of our greatest resources — the sea.  Furthermore, plastics are typically made from oil, a nonrenewable resource whose extraction is detrimental to the environment.  Currently, 8% of all oil is used for plastics and this number is expected to reach 20% by 2050. Plastics degrade our environment, consume valuable fossil fuels, and impact our health, but through personal action to reduce plastic use and educate others about the harmful consequences of plastics, we can all work towards a healthier and sustainable future.

 

 

REACH OUT

We always speak about ‘They’. They need to do something about the plastic problem. They need to stop overfishing. What They are doing to our oceans is simply unacceptable. But who are They?

The government? The government is an administrative body elected by the people. The government exists only to serve out the needs of those people. They is in fact our society, a collection of individuals. You are one of those individuals, and so am I. There is no They, there is only We, and We are all part of the problem. However, We can choose to be part of the solution instead. Sure, sometimes it feels like one individual has such a small chance of creating meaningful change – so why bother. But remember, if everyone had that mindset, there is 100% chance that nothing will change.

Single-use plastic in the pandemic: how to stay safe and sustainable
  • In Europe and the US, the plastic industry has used the threat of coronavirus contamination to push back against bans on single-use plastics.
  • Research shows one of the biggest challenges in promoting sustainable behaviours is to break old habits and adopt new ones.

In eight years, US environmentalist and social media star Lauren Singer had never sent an item of rubbish to landfill. But last month, in an impassioned post to her 383,000 Instagram followers, she admitted the reality of COVID-19 has changed that.

I sacrificed my values and bought items in plastic. Lots of it, and plastic that I know isn’t recyclable in NYC (New York City) recycling or maybe even anywhere … why would I go against something that I have actively prioritised and promoted?

Singer wrote that as the seriousness of COVID-19 dawned, she stocked up on items she’d need if confined to her home for a long period – much of it packaged in plastic.

Her confession encapsulates how the pandemic has challenged those of us who are trying to reduce our waste. Many sustainability-conscious people may now find themselves with cupboards stocked with plastic bottles of hand sanitiser, disposable wipes and takeaway food containers.

So let’s look at why this is happening, and what to do about it.

Sustainability out the window

We research how consumers respond to change, such as why consumers largely resisted single-use plastic bag bans. Recently we’ve explored how the coronavirus has changed the use of plastic bags, containers and other disposable products.

Amid understandable concern over health and hygiene during the pandemic, the problem of disposable plastics has taken a back seat.

For example, Coles’ home delivery service is delivering items in plastic bags (albeit reusable ones) and many coffee shops have banned reusable mugsincluding global Starbucks branches.

Restaurants and other food businesses can now only offer home delivery or takeaway options. Many won’t allow customers to bring their own containers, defaulting to disposables which generate plastic waste. This means many consumers can’t reduce their plastic waste, even if they wanted to.

Demand for products such as disposable wipes, cleaning agents, hand sanitiser, disposable gloves and masks is at a record high. Unfortunately, they’re also being thrown out in unprecedented volumes.

And the imperative to prevent the spread of coronavirus means tonnes of medical waste is being generated. For example, hospitals and aged care facilities have been advised to double-bag clinical waste from COVID-19 patients. While this is a necessary measure, it adds to the plastic waste problem.

Cause for hope

Sustainability and recycling efforts are continuing. Soft plastics recycler Red Cycle is still operating. However many drop-off points for soft plastics, such as schools and council buildings, are closed, and some supermarkets have removed their drop-off bins.

Boomerang Alliance’s Plastic Free Places program has launched a guide for cafes and restaurants during COVID-19. It shows how to avoid single-use plastics, and what compostable packaging alternatives are available.

As the guide notes, “next year the coronavirus will hopefully be a thing of the past but plastic pollution won’t be. It’s important that we don’t increase plastic waste and litter in the meantime.”

 

Old habits die hard

In the US, lobbyists for the plastic industry have taken advantage of health fears by arguing single-use plastic bags are a more hygienic option than reusable ones. Plastic bag bans have since been rolled back in the US and elsewhere.

However, there is little evidence to show plastic bags are a safer option, and at least reusable cloth bags can be washed.

A relaxation on plastic bag bans – even if temporary – is likely to have long-term consequences for consumer behaviour. Research shows one of the biggest challenges in promoting sustainable behaviours is to break old habits and adopt new ones. Once people return to using plastic bags, the practice becomes normalised again.

In Europe, the plastic industry is using the threat of coronavirus contamination to push back against a ban on single-use plastics such as food containers and cutlery.

Such reframing of plastic as a “protective” health material can divert attention from its dangers to the environment. Prior research, as well as our preliminary findings, suggest these meanings matter when it comes to encouraging environmentally friendly behaviours.

Many people are using their time at home to clear out items they no longer need. However, most second-hand and charity shops are closed, so items that might have had a second life end up in landfill.

Similarly, many toolbook and toy libraries are closed, meaning some people will be buying items they might otherwise have borrowed.

What to do

We can expect the environmental cause will return to the foreground when the COVID-19 crisis has passed. In the meantime, reuse what you have, and try to store rather than throw out items for donation or recycling.

Talk to takeaway food outlets about options for using your own containers, and refuse disposable cutlery or napkins with deliveries. Use the time to upskill your coffee-making at home rather than buying it in a takeaway cup. And look for grocery suppliers offering more sustainable delivery packaging, such as cardboard boxes or biodegradable bags.

Above all, be vigilant about ways environmental protections such as plastic bag bans might be undermined during the pandemic, and voice your concerns to politicians.
