The buildings sector, including both residential and commercial buildings – accounts for around a quarter of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions, and is a massive consumer of energy, water and materials. In some areas, most notably at the leading edge of commercial property, Australia has an enviable reputation as delivering some of the most sustainable real estate – consistently rating highly in indices such as the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB). Best practice has been driven by a combination of Government schemes and industry initiatives, with an ever-increasing focus on triple bottom line sustainability and the full life-cycle impacts of buildings.
Yet despite all the progress made so far, the challenges remain substantial. To meet limit global warming to less than two degrees, it is suggested that all buildings must be “net zero carbon” by 2050, requiring a radical change to the way that buildings are constructed and operated. At the same time, our changing climate will require buildings and communities to be more resilient and adaptable than ever before.
