The remaining 79% if not in use has accumulated in either landfills or the natural environment.  Plastic leaching is a source of land as well as air pollution.

Plastics produce toxic chemicals when exposed to high heat. A study by the U.S. Centres for Disease Control found BPA in nearly 93 percent of people tested. We ingest micro-plastics on a daily basis without even realising it.

One million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals die each year from plastic pollution in our oceans. Thousands of wild and stray animals and birds dies each year due to ingestion of plastic waste.
