Chumbe Island is an exclusive eco-destination situated off the South West coast of Zanzibar, approximately 15km South West of Stone Town. Chumbe Island Coral Park includes a fully protected coral reef sanctuary, forest reserve, education centre and breezy eco-lodge immersed in nature, designed to have zero impact on the environment. The 55ha coral reef is home to a highly diverse hard coral community and 500 reef fish species. Rare wildlife protected on and around the island includes the giant coconut crab, Ader’s duiker (antelope), turtles and dolphins.
As a not-for-profit enterprise, the revenue generated by ecotourism funds all conservation management and Chumbe’s environmental education programme. Operational for more than 25 years, Chumbe is the world’s 1. financially self-sustaining marine protected area. The 7 eco-bungalows have been specially designed with a one of its kind eco-architecture and technology. Chumbe Island joined The Long Run in 2011. The 4Cs – Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce – are at the heart of every aspect of Chumbe’s operations. It was the first property awarded Global Ecosphere Retreats recognition.
Chumbe offers an exclusive island retreat for nature lovers. Snorkeling the coral gardens with one of Chumbe’s local rangers is a must-do activity, together with guided walks through the forest, a visit up to the historic lighthouse of the island and nightly crab walks to discover the largest land-living crab in the world! Dining takes place on open-air terraces overlooking the Indian Ocean or under palm trees and stars. Chumbe’s talented local chefs prepare mouthwatering dishes. The genuine hospitality of the island team will ensure that visitors feel part of the Chumbe island family.
